Royal Danish New Year Court & Banquet 2011

Photo © Hasse Ferrold / ICC
Queen Margrethe, Prince Henrik, Crown Prince Frederik, Prince Joachim and Princess Marie have attended one of Royal Denmark's grandest occasions of the year, the New Year's Court and Banquet for the government, representatives of official Denmark and the Court in Christian VII's palace at Amalienborg. Princess Elizabeth (cousin to the Queen) was on the guest list, but we did not see her arrive. Crown Princess Mary sent her apologies some time ago due to her advanced pregnancy. One of the ways we can tell this is a grand occasion - for the uninitiated - is that the royals wear their Order of the Elephant on the chain, not on the blue ribbon.

TV2 article - 'Skål i rosenborgvin på Amalienborg' ~ mentions Mary's absence with apologies and names some of the guests who drank some historical Rosenborg wine with the soup course. They have a single glass of what is probably the world's oldest Rhine wine which arrived in Denmark at the end of the 16th century. The wine, which has some fresher vintage added to make it palatable, is apparently not the greatest tasting wine to be had - but this is an interesting Danish historical tradition.

After the twins announcement...

Photo © Uffe Weng/B.T.

On the day the official announcement of Mary's twin pregnancy, Frederik was sailing in Marstrand in Sweden in the Dragon Gold Cup 2010 and told Ekstra Bladet that "It is a double miracle". From B.T. Frederik was reported saying it will be quite a handful having twins. He said he didn't know how it would be to be a father of four, he supposed he will find out in six months. Frederik also said he and Mary had never thought they would 'make two babies', confirming what the Danish Court spokesperson Lene Balleby had already stated to the media, that the twins were conceived naturally. Prince Henrik, also at the Dragon Cup, had happily told Billed Bladet that even triplets would also be welcome. B.T. also wanted to know if it will be the end of baby-making after January. Frederik laughed, said that was funny, didn't answer the question, but said they would take it quietly, one day at a time.

The Monday after the announcement Mary took Christian and Isabella for their first day of the school year. They are still attending nursery school but joined their schoolmates in celebrating the first day of pre-school for their former school chums (school begins at age 7 in Denmark). Since Christian was born at the end of the year Frederik and Mary have decided to keep him with his peers, although some of the older children in his group started pre-school on the day.
Billed Bladet (No.32, 2010) Mary i skole med Christian og Isabella - Mary to school with Christian and Isabella
Week 32 is the start of the new school year for many children in Denmark. That also included those attending Dronning Louise's Børnehus (= kindergarten/nursery school) in Fredensborg, which Christian and Bella attend. The kindergarten re-opened Monday August 9th after the summer holidays and Mary drove her children there.
On the way they stopped to see the big children who were starting in school at the nearby public school. Other children and parents from the kindergarten had also shown up with flags in the school yard, including some mates of Christian and Isabella.
Christian is a big boy, almost five, and he could start in pre-school this year but Frederik and Mary have opted to wait another year. But some of his mates from kindergarten started this week. Christian was left with his mates and Mary and Isabella went over to some of her mates and from here they saw the pupils on the way to school. It's hardly a secret that Mary is pregnant and many wished her well or gave her a thumbs up. Then it was on to the kindergarten. Bella had to get used to the idea that summer holiday was over and it was time for a new year in the kindergarten. (by Ulrik Ulriksen)

Princess Marie hasn't escaped the festival of babies. The day after the official announcement of Mary's twin pregnancy she was asked about the matter when she christened a rose named for her at a rose festival in Bogense. Billed Bladet's Ken Richter writes the weather was great and so was the turnout when Princess Marie visited Bogense. The news about twins had just broken so Marie was naturally also asked about her plans, "I hope I'll have more children - but not right now". As for Mary's news she said, "It's so lovely and I'm really happy for them. They are really fortunate." As with Joachim, she was also told when the family was gathered at Gråsten at the end the end of the summer holidays. Marie christened the Princess Marie rose in the crowded town square. Beforehand Marie had been taken for a tour through the town, including an exhibition of christening gowns, and just in case she should have missed the point, cardboard storks had also been planted here and there.
And in case she still didn't get it, her father-in-law Prince Henrik had expressed his delight at soon becoming a grandfather of seven and added that he wouldn't mind at all if even more grandchildren came along. There is a Billed Bladet photo gallery here of Marie's visit to the rose festival in Bogense.

Princes Nikolai and Felix had their first day at school on August 9 too. According to a B.T. report Nikolai is beginning fifth grade and Felix is starting second grade at Krebs School, the alma mater of their father and Crown Prince Frederik. Their first day arrival, together with Countess Alexandra and Prince Joachim, can be seen in this gallery. The suntanned princes can be seen with Countess Alexandra and Martin Jørgensen arriving at school here.

Frederik & Mary farewell their chief-of-court Per Thornit

April 22, 2010: Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary hosted a formal farewell reception for Per Thornit, their chief-of-court, at Amalienborg. It was announced on March 30 that Per Thornit would retire at the end of this month. A new chief-of-court is yet to be announced. Per Thornit, 68 in June, has worked for the court for 25 years, supporting and advising Frederik, Joachim, Alexandra and then Mary into their public royal life. Per Thornit and his second wife Ulla were farewelled by royal and other guests including jazz musician Fuzzy (he composed Frederik's processional music), architect Noah Whitehorn (who has overseen the restoration of Frederik VIII's palace at Amalienborg) and royal family lawyer Henrik Wedel-Wedelsborg and his wife Gitte. Although unable to attend the recent Queen's birthday celebrations, 97-year-old Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller also attended. As well as being a long time friend of the royal family and one of the world's oldest billionaires according to Forbes, he is the only non-royal to hold the Royal Order of the Elephant. Per Thornit will continue service to the court as the treasurer of the Royal Orders of Chivalry.

Her Majesty The Queen has expressed her appreciation for the Chamberlain's excellent service.

Per Thornit has served with the Royal Family since 1985, when he was hired as head of the Cabinet Secretariat. From 1990 Per Thornit functioned as Chief Secretary to Their Royal Highnesses Crown Prince Frederik and Prince Joachim and then from 2004 as Chamberlain to Their Royal Highnesses the Crown Prince and the Crown Princess.

Her Majesty the Queen has decided that following his resignation, Per Thornit is to take over the office of Treasurer of the Royal Danish Orders of Chivalry after the current Chamberlain, Ambassador Paul Fischer.

A successor is expected to be appointed shortly.

Berlingske Tidende - The Chamberlain of the Crown Prince Couple's Court Per Thornit, resigns at the end of April, the court has announced.
Per Thornit has been with the Royal house since 1985, when he was hired as head of the Cabinet secretariat.
From 1990 Per Thornit acted as a head of court for Crown Prince Frederik and Prince Joachim and from 2004 as a head of royal staff for the Crown Prince and the Crown Princess.
Her Majesty The Queen pronounces "her appreciation of the head of royal staff's excellent service" and has decided that Per Thornit, after his resignation, is to be Treasurer of The Royal Danish Order of Chivalry, writes the court in its press release.
A successor as a head of royal staff is expected appointed soon.

By his own request the Crown Prince Couple's head of royal staff Per Thornit resigns his position at the end of April 2010.
He has covered many different positions since he was employed as head of the cabinet secretariat in 1985.
Since 2004 Per Thornit has been the head of royal staff for Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary.
Most recently he has played a part in putting distinctive marks on the renovation of the Crown Prince Couple's next home at Amalienborg by originating the idea of letting Danish artists decorate parts of the palace.
Queen Margrethe expresses her appreciation of his excellent service in connection with Per Thornit's resignation.

The Crown Prince has to have new head of royal staff, after his closest personal guide for 20 years has announced his departure.

For 20 years Per Thornit has helped Crown Prince Frederik, 14 of them also with Prince Joachim, who was their nearest personal advisor and the adult they were closest to in their younger days.

Now he chooses to leave the position as a the Crown Prince Couple's head of royal staff with his exit at the end of April.

Per Thornit will be 68 years old in June.

Started in Cabinet Secretariat

He has known Crown Prince Frederik and Prince Joachim since they were 17 years and 16 years, and he began at Amalienborg as head of the Queen's Cabinet Secretariat.

The head of royal staff (Chamberlain), a title he got in 2004, has been known for his own firm opinions which have not always been in agreement with The Queen's Lord Chamberlains' [Ove Ullerup] during his time as a secretarial manager of the two princes.

He stood at one time for maintaining distance from the relentless media before the royal house employed its first head of communication and public affairs, Lis M. Frederiksen.

"Here in the palace we manage [what is] outside. I think it's easier for me to maintain distance and say "no comment", than it'd be for a press spokesperson who [reduces] distance. That is what I also think is the peoples' wish," Per Thornit said in an interview with Jyllands-Posten in 2002.

Stays treasurer

Per Thornit has followed the renovation of the Crown Prince Couple's next home at Amalienborg, Frederik VIII's Palace, very closely.

He is very enthusiastic about art and in that role has also been able to act as a qualified adviser to Frederik and Mary.

The Queen has decided that Per Thornit is to take over the office as a treasurer of The Royal Danish Knights Orders after his resignation at the [end of] the current chamberlain's, ambassador Paul Fischer's [tenure].

JV.dk story about Ronny Andersen, one of the designers of new coins to mark Queen Magrethe's birthday. He is known as a heraldist, a designer of coats of arms (he did Crown Princess Mary's) but has branched out into coin design for the Royal Danish Mint. He made a design of a bed of daisies for the royal coat of arms on the reverse side of the gold and silver coins. The daisies honour Queen Margrethe's name and her name among family and friends - Daisy.

Jyllands Posten -an interview with Frederik and Joachim in advance of their mother's birthday in which they say their mother and father are a perfect match. Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik fit together like two pieces of a puzzle pieces. Prince Henrik gives the Queen's life a balance in both private and public, say their sons.
For Crown Prince Frederik and Prince Joachim their parents' marriage is a perfect match. Prince Henrik's support has been very important to the Queen through their 42 year marriage," say the princes in an interview with Ritzau newsagency before the Queen's 70th birthday on April 16.
"I am delighted that my mother finds an indispensable partner in my father. He can give both loving and professional advice when she faces a challenge," says Crown Prince Frederik... and Prince Joachim agrees. "In the early years the Prince Consort helped the Queen in overcoming shyness which she herself has said troubled her. My father is calm, so he influenced her not to find challenging situations so confronting," says Prince Joachim.

Crown Prince Frederik recognises that same feeling in his marriage to Crown Princess Mary. "I've felt less alone since the Crown Princess has been by my side. She stands beside me and has another way from me which means we complements each other.

*****

In the lead up to the birthday there have been many articles and special retrospective photo galleries published, including this from Billed Bladet, based on a new book Margrethe, My Life in Images, published at the end of last month.

Billed Bladet reported that, according to the Queen, Mary had changed her relationship with Frederik and gives a tribute to Mary for bringing her closer to her son.

"I think I have become closer to the Crown Prince since he got married than I ever was before," says a happy Queen and proud mother in a new book. "I am extremely pleased, not only for her efforts, but also for her as a person. And then she is very good for her husband and he thrives on it, that you can see!" Queen Margrethe is enthusiastic in her praise of her daughter-in-law, Mary. This appears in the book
Margrethe, My Life in Images, published in late March. It is rare that the Queen talks about her private relationship with the rest of the royal family. Such remarks and reflections are usually kept within the castle walls. But the Queen is so enthusiastic about Crown Princess Mary that she almost bubbles over with enthusiasm and is more than happy to talk about her daughter-in-law. Mary has done Frederik a lot of good, and this his mother can easily see, which of course she is happy about. Some of the uncertainty that characterised the Crown Prince, is much improved and it's thanks to Mary, says the Queen. What mother would not be enthusiastic about such a daughter-in-law? says Billed Bladet. There is no terrible daughter-in-law to separate mother and son the Queen joked animatedly.

No one knew in advance who Crown Prince Frederik would choose as a girlfriend and of course his mother was anxious. "I have to say that I'm so happy with the Crown Prince's choice. The Crown Princess has now had several years in Denmark, and ... well, I just think she does it so well," said the Queen in the book, and continues "I am so happy for her, and we have a very, very cosy and comfortable ease together."

There is one person Frederik is annoyed that Mary never met. It was his grandmother, Queen Ingrid. It also irks Queen Margrethe. In the book
Margrethe, My Life in Images by Helle Bygum she says it directly: "I am so sorry that my mother never got to experience her, because I think my mom would have really appreciated her. I think also that Frederik is quite aware of that. He arrived home from Australia before mother died, and what they said to each other, I did not know. And I still do not know." (Queen Ingrid was very weak and ill when Frederik arrived back in Denmark after visiting Mary in Australia in November 2000, following their initial meeting in September 2000 during the Sydney Olympics.)

Crown Princess Mary is in general an important person in the royal family. She does a great job with her foundations and patronages and with all the organisations she is involved in. It is a fulltime job for the industrious Crown Princess, who prepares thoroughly for every event. In the DR TV series Inside the Monarchy (which has been a year in the life of the DRF broadcast recently on Danish TV) there is clip from a working meeting between Mary and her two ladies-in-waiting, Tanja Doky and Caroline Heering. Here they are planning Mary’s participation in an event on sustainable fashion, and it is Mary, who is in charge. "I think we should have a word with them. I am not an expert on sustainable fashion. Perhaps a more relevant person should be standing there, Mary says honestly, who doesn't wish to put herself forward just for the sake of it, but of course always makes an effort when it is needed (Mary ended up making the speech). There are many demands on Mary but ultimately it is she who decides what she wants do. "It's not as if one says: You must get up at eight o'clock and have lunch at 12 noon. We are planning our own calendar, we are planning our own lives. It is we who control it," the Queen explains. It is clear that Crown Princess Mary is a diligent, conscientious member of the Danish royal family. Her mother-in-law knows this, and Queen Margrethe loves her for it.

Queen Margrethe is also very much pleased about Prince Joachim's choice of wife, she also reveals in the book
Margrethe: My life in pictures. The Queen says "It should be no secret that I think I have gotten two very, very sweet daughters-in-law. I think both the Crown Princess and Princess Marie do incredibly well. Later the Queen continues "Both my daughters-in-law are pretty and dark-haired, and one can describe them as similar, but they are very different people, as they do indeed come from two completely different countries. One comes out of an Australian, and in many ways British, background because her parents are Scottish, and Princess Marie comes out of a very French family. But it is a great pleasure to get in the French one more time."

More to come tomorrow, it's past bed time on this side of the planet!
Many thanks to commoner, gudinde, cph, mitchell and aus73 :)

Greek State Visit to Denmark: day 2

The second day of the Greek state visit has been busy with Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary doing the heavy lifting of accompanying the presidential couple through their programs during the day. In the evening the Royal Family attended the return gala at the Royal Museum of Fine Art where the Greek delegation put on a concert followed by dinner. During the morning Crown Prince Frederik accompanied the Greek President Karolos Papoulias and his wife May Panou Papoulia on a tour of some of Denmark's climate and energy initiatives and sustainable urban development projects. They sailed from Amaliehavn onto Copenhagen Harbour to inspect the off-shore wind farm at Middelgrunden. Afterwards the party visited the Mountain Dwellings sustainably designed project at Ørestaden. Mountain Dwellings, inspired by Aztec design, was awarded the world’s best housing solution at the World Architecture Festival 2009. A lunchtime session of the Danish-Greek Climate and Business Forum at the Confederation of Danish Industries followed for Frederik and the president, focusing on the major theme of the visit: renewable energy. During the afternoon President Papoulias visited the Memorial cemetery - Mindelunden - for a wreath laying ceremony. Mindelunden is a cemetery for executed freedom fighters and members of the resistance movement who died in German concentration camps during World War II. During the afternoon Crown Princess Mary and Mrs May Panou Papoulia visited the Skodsborg Observation and Treatment Home. Mrs Papoulia is a trained psychologist and shares an interest with Mary in issues of neglected children. The home is for children with serious special needs and is connected to the Mary Foundation. Crown Princess Mary and Mrs May Papoulia later visited the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, north of Copenhagen. In the evening the Regent Couple and members of the Royal Family attended the return engagement, a gala concert and dinner, hosted by the Greek President at the Royal Museum for Fine Art (Statens Museum for Kunst).
