Frederik @ church gift giving

Crown Prince Frederik has visited and helped with the Church's Canon Regulars for the Christmas distribution of clothes, food and gifts to the homeless, single mothers and others in need at the Church's Drejervej helping hand centre in the north-west of Copenhagen. The Church has an extensive organisation of assistance and support centres for families and the disadvantaged throughout Denmark.

TV2 article 'Kronprins giver gaver med Korshær'- Frederik helped handing out clothes, gifts and foodstuffs for the homeless, single mothers and others in needy at the Christmas distribution in the North West Quarter, along with the other employees of the Church Canon's .

Jyllands Posten 'Kronprinsen i gavehumør' - A Crown Prince in high form helped with distributing gifts to single mothers. He smiled and asked the mothers about their situation and wished them a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

From Jyllands Posten: Bebianne Larsen (pictured above) was one of those who received a helping hand. I hadn't noticed it was he [the Crown Prince], was a bit confused and called him "du" [informal 'you' instead of formal 'you'].

Crown Prince Frederik took part in the handing out of Christmas presents on behalf of Kirkens Korshær at Nørrebro in Copenhagen [a working class neighbourhood] for the first time.
The recipients received a bag with various presents, a varying amount of money and tickets to a football [soccer] game.
One of the recipients was mother-of-two, Petrea Maria Wismach, who brought along her four month old daughter, Melanie.
Frederik couldn’t resist the little girl and offered: “She’s gorgeous. Just let me hold her while you [informal 'you'] sign.” Mother Petra didn’t mind.
“I told the Crown Prince that Melanie was originally to be called Isabella, but when he and Mary “stole” the name I changed my mind, because we can’t have two princesses named Isabella. He laughed a little over that one.”
The single mum, Nadia Jensen, said to Frederik: “It’s a very big day for me. It’s the third time I’m here.”
Frederik replied: “Well, it’s my first time here. But I’ve been looking forward to it. It’s nice to be Santa Claus.”
Later Fredrik visited the homeless shelter in the back of the building, where homeless and others with social issues can get a hot meal, a bath and some clean clothes.

    Frederik @ Galathea 3 symposium

File photo: Galathea 3's arrival back in Denmark after the expedition
Last Thursday Crown Prince Frederik participated in a symposium on the work of the Galathea 3 expedition at the Sea Officers Society in Copenhagen. Frederik is the patron for the Galathea 3 Expedition of 2006-7 and the scientists who did more than 100 studies are beginning to present and discuss their preliminary findings.

And in late August Frederik was at a Copenhagen Historic Grand Prix event. A little YouTube - since this is Prince Joachim's 'thing', perhaps Frederik was there to see his brother...

Frederik presents Research Communication Prize 2007

Along with the celebration of the return of the Galathea 3, today Crown Prince Frederik has awarded the Research Communication Prize for 2007. Normally Crown Princess Mary would make this award as it is her patronage, but as Mary is on maternity leave, Frederik is standing in for her this year. This year the Research Prize was presented onboard the Vædderen in honour of its own scientific endeavours, to Professor Ole Mouritzen of Syddansk University for molecular research. The prize is valued at 100,000 DKk and helps to empahasise the objective of the Galathea 3 expedition to encourage scientific research as a career path for young people. (thanks Janne!)

Added: TV2 reported that Frederik began his speech by giving greetings from his daughter "who says she needs her mother today and who unfortunately could not be here today - but she has confidence in me as a replacement for my wife". This is a reference to the Research Prize being Mary's patronage.

    Frederik at Galathea 3 homecoming

Today Crown Prince Frederik has been to Langelinje (part of the Copenhagen harbour) to take part in the homecoming celebration for the return of the Galathea 3 expedition on the specially re-fitted Danish navy surveillance vessel the Vædderen. It has been 258 days since the Vædderen set sail from Copenhagen. Frederik joined the ship as it entered the harbour and the Sixtus Battery gave a salute as it sailed into Langelinje with the Crown Prince on board.

We should also mention that before Lillepigen was born Frederik had also attended several functions in anticipation of the return of the Galathea 3 research expedition voyage in the Vædderen to mark its homecoming. The events were organised by the Danish Expeditionary Foundation at Nyhavn in Copenhagen and recognised the sponsors. There was a time when sponsorship by newspaper Jyllands Posten made all the difference for the expedition to proceed. The foundation has been the organiser and fundraiser for Galathea 3. There have been a number of events to mark the return of the Vædderen and highlight the work of the expedition. Frederik attended a lunch on 12 April 2007 and another on April 17.

There was an interesting note for April 17: as it made its way home, the Vædderen passed the point in the Atlantic where the Titanic sank, at 41 degrees 46 minutes north by 50 degrees 14 minutes west. Also check out the Jyllands Posten/Galathea 3 photo series from the whole voyage including the 'best of' gallery just posted.

An interesting Swedish link which gives a good overview of the vision behind the Galathea project: SASNET - Swedish South Asian Studies Network

And a little background about Galathea 3: it is the largest Danish scientific expedition since the Galathea 2 expedition more than 50 years ago. The aim is to strengthen Danish scientific research through the research projects conducted during the expedition, and also to inspire recruitment of scientists from among upcoming generations.

Galathea 3 has focused on education and communicating about the 71 research projects conducted on board the Vaedderen. The ship has circumnavigated the world over seven months at sea with 35 research scientists, a dozen journalists, photographers and TV crew, plus a couple of students and their teacher onboard. A crew of 50 have kept the ship sailing and functioning for the more or less 100 people onboard.

The research projects have included the areas of climate and the environment, biology, geology, history and culture.

Queen Margrethe up & about again

Queen Margrethe made her first appearance since her knee surgery last week on 14 March, 2007. The Queen presented the Queen's Watch, a bi-annual tradition begun by her father King Frederik IX to honour outstanding service. At Rosenborg Castle there was a military parade and the Queen presented the watch to Royal Guard Tim Thestrup Foss, although, as with last year, the Queen sat through the ceremonial event with a pair of crutches beside her. The Queen is still using crutches as she continues to recuperate.

Queen Margrethe used arm crutches due to a recent operation in her knee when she attend the Queen's Watch ceremony in Copenhagen. Royal Guard Tim Thestrup Foss, received Queen Margrethe's award.

Meanwhile, Prince Henrik has returned from his stint on the Galathea 3 Expedition, which he joined as Crown Prince Frederik departed.

The President of Ukraine, Victor Yushchenko, had a busy schedule of business and political meetings and visits during his and his wife's two day visit last week. Yushchenko signed agreements, visited the Folketing (Danish parliament) and made an address, was interviewed by DR2. The President is working to cement the position of his country in the European Union and gain the benefits of membership for Ukraine He also had an audience with the Queen in what appeared to be a very warm meeting. The meeting with the Queen was 16 March 2007.

    Frederik 'christened' by King Neptune

    All photos by Esben Nielsen/POLFOTO

Crown Prince Frederik has been christened on the Vædderen according to the sailor's tradition when crossing the Equator. Frederik's new name is "The Kissing Frog" and his bodyguard, who is from Bornholm, has been named the "The Bornholmian Frog Guard".

These photos were taken yesterday as the Vædderen sails through the Panama Canal on its way to the Atlantic. Frederik talks with Karen Marie Hillingsøe and another crew member about their projects. (photos Esben Nielsen/POLFOTO)

Good to see the Military and Science working together

    By Else Boelskifte
    The Pacific, Panama
The sponsor of the Expedition, Crown Prince Frederik, finds it aggravating that the expedition has been critized for not being better at communicating the results...
»One could wish that the ordinary citizen had the opportunity to get a stay on board, but you can get a lot by logging onto the internet to read all the good stuff about what's going on the ship,« he says.
The Crown Prince admits that the fact that readers have to log onto the internet may be a limitation for some, but the possibility is there.
»To me it has been a positive experience to be together with two school students from Espergærde who are on board at the moment. They are a boy and a girl, who have been fascinated and will never forget this trip and the impressions they have had here. They have got a lot downloaded onto the big harddisk,« he says. (the project records)...

JydskeVestkysten 'Galathea: Kronprinsen er levende interesseret' and an excerpt:

Galathea: The Crown Prince has a lively interest
Yes! Crown Prince Frederik exclaimed in triumph!
Frederik had put a question to one of the scientists on Galathea 3 for which she had no ready answer. It was "How come octopusses can breath in oxygen-poor waters when other sea animals cannot?"

JydskeVestkysten 'Galathea: Jeg lystrer navnet Frederik'

Galathea: I answer to the name Frederik

Henriette Pilegaard , JydskeVestkystens aboard the Vædderen:
Crown Prince Frederik came on board again, after having had three days cruise around the Galapagos Islands in a trimaran...
All 99 people on board had an inspection in the hangar according to boat practice and then afterwards there was a round of presentations, because many new expeditioners were signing on.
From Frederik, "I am the Crown Prince and I answer to the name of Frederik. I am already glad to be here," were the words from the only one on board who had portraits of his parents hanging in the mess...

Berlinske Tidende (in Danish) 'Logbog dag 212: Medlevende kronprins' interview with Frederik by Henriette Pilegaard.

Note: We have had some messages indicating some confusion about Frederik's location. He is not in Miami where a substitute helmsman is sailing Nanoq in the current competition there. The strict Farr 40 rules allow for helmsmen to be absent from two events per year and a substitute is organised no less than two weeks before competition begins, although the owner and or/helmsman is still listed in relation to the boat. Nanoq and crew needs lots of practice for the Farr 40 World Championships to be held in Denmark in late summer this year. See the Farr 40 Scandinavian/Baltic schedule for a busy summer culminating in the World Championships in late August in Copenhagen.

Latest: Jyllands Posten logbook (in Danish) 'Regnskoven rundt om hjørnet' Frederik has now left the Vædderen and Prince Henrik is on the ship. Henrik sat on the bridge with the captain and the Canal's pilot as the ship passed through the gates of the canal. There was a mini-expedition into the Panamanian rainforest which was a parallel of the 1952 Galathea 2

Galathea 3 - the expedition begins

Today Crown Prince Frederik is visiting the ship Vædderen, the lead ship in the Galathea 3 Expedition which is due to set sail tomorrow. Along with other guests, Frederik is attending this event to highlight the beginning of this third Danish Galathea expedition. Frederik will also be present to see the expedition off tomorrow from the Amalie Quay in Copenhagen.

Galathea expeditions have an interesting history. The first expedition was initiated by King Christian VIII and sailed from 1845 to 1847. See Galathea 1 (1845-47).

The second expedition came a hundred years after the first and sailed from 1950 to 1952. See Galathea 2 (1950-52). Prince Axel (nephew of Frederik's grandfather King Frederik IX) was involved with this expedition.

The Vædderen, which means 'The Ram' in Danish, is the Danish Navy surveillance vessel which will undertake the voyage to circumnavigate the Earth, sailing tomorrow and returning to Denmark in April 2007. The expedition will be concerned with research into biology, geology, culture and history, and climate and the environment. Read about the Vædderen (Danish Naval History) and the preparation of the ship and its facilities for the voyage.

Crown Prince Frederik is the patron of the Danish Expedition Foundation which organises the expedition and has been quite closely involved with its organisation. Frederik has already been an expeditioner: in 1986 he went to Central Asia (Mongolia) and in 2000 he participated in the Sirius Expedition travelling 2,800 kms by dog sled across northern Greenland. It is expected that he may paticipate in part of this expedition too, although details are not yet known. See Galathea 3 bound for the seven seas for details of who is involved and its organisation (in English).

Explore the Galathea 3 website, it has some great information about the route, history, research and activities of the expedition. Danish classrooms will have a direct satellite connection to the ship while it is on its journey:
