Happy birthday Queen Margrethe!

Happy birthday to Queen Margrethe. Born at Amalienborg Palace in 1940, the Queen was christened Margrethe Alexandrine Þorhildur Ingrid. The Icelandic Þorhildur was a given name at a time when Iceland was still part of Denmark (until 1944). On ascension to the throne Queen Margrethe declared her motto to be "God’s help, the love of The People, Denmark’s strength". As heir apparent the Queen was given a seat at the State Council when she turned 18 in 1958. Of course, today is a flag flying day, so we are flying the Dannebrog in honour of the Queen's birthday!

Hi marilyn!
It is a beautiful tiara. I think this photo is from 2002 (from memory) - it is a pitty the Queen doesn't wear it more often.
cheers

Do you know anything about the history of it? It would be great to have some background. Until I saw this I thought the Lover's Knot Tiara was the most beautiful one. This has definately taken it's place!

Hi marilyn,
Sorry for not getting back sooner!
Um, I have to confess neither of us are experts about the history of tiaras.
I only know this one is called the Baden Palmette Tiara. It was Ingrid's of course and Margrethe wore it to Harald's and Sonia's wedding and then also to Haakon's and Märtha Louise's. The photo on the blog was taken on a visit to Belgium in 2002 I believe.
It is really beautiful and I wonder why she doesn't wear it or share it, if you get what I mean!
Cheers
