Joachim & Marie on honeymoon

Photos © msn.dk starlounge/SeogHør/All Over

One of Denmark's tabloids hunted high and hunted low and found Prince Joachim and Princess Marie in Canada a couple of days ago. The claim is that the newlyweds spent time in the Canadian wilderness on the west coast and then went to Montreal where these photos were taken. Fortunately they don't look too perturbed by being 'sprung' at the end of their honeymoon, having escaped media attention up until now. Billed Bladet reports the couple are now at home at Schackenborg, having arrived back in Copenhagen last Tuesday morning. Joachim and Marie will be at home for a concert at Schackenborg on Sunday and begin their first official duties in Denmark during next week.

Joachim & Marie: official photos plus

Photos © Steen Brogaard/¡Hola!/Berlingske Tidende

Official wedding photos from Joachim's and Marie's wedding were taken at Schackenborg on Saturday after the church ceremony by Steen Brogaard. Joachim and Marie partied into the night with their guests and stayed at Schackenborg for their wedding night. They took their time saying goodbye to Marie's family yesterday, some of whom went walking through Møgeltønder. Part of the entertainment during the night was a fireworks and light show. The midnight snacks included sausages from a typical Danish sausage/hotdog stand, the Børges Pølsevogn Stand, which was transported by Prince Joachim from Copenhagen where it usually resides on one of the city squares.

Added: According to B.T., Prince Joachim gave a very romantic and moving speech addressed to Marie at the wedding dinner at Schackenborg and it was in French. This meant that some of those who understood French apparently shed a tear or two. Marie's father also gave a warm speech expressing his joy that Marie had found Joachim and suggesting only the best is good enough for her. The Regent Couple did not give a speech on this occasion. The Regent Couple had spoken the evening before however at the party they had given at Gråsten Palace, where they expressed their joy about Marie and the marriage.

B.T. 'Joachim og Marie: Bryllupsnat hjemme på slottet' - Joachim and Marie: wedding night at home in the castle
They were celebrating together till the morning light with Joachim and Marie, who didn't really surprise by staying put at home for the wedding night.
It was a beautiful wedding party for Princess Marie and Prince Joachim. The Danish royal family came in force for the wedding and then Sunday morning Marie's family and friends enjoyed the lovely sunshine in Møgeltønder and relaxed after the wedding.
The party went until the early morning and was fueled by 18 bigband musicians from Prinsens Musikkorps who played the last number at four in the morning.
There was dancing and Marie danced with several royals and got some firsthand experience as a princess.
The atmosphere was still on a high when the last visitors from the wedding party left Schackenborg Castle at 5.30am. There was lots of laughter, fun and games among the younger guests.
Some hours earlier the older generation had left, among them Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik.
Crown Prince Frederik looked like he had a lovely evening when he zoomed out of the the castle in the small hours with Mary. He looked very happy for his little brother and on the way home to Gråsten Palace he drank a bottle of water in the royal car. It was needed to dilute Prince Henrik's wines...and the Danish sausages from the Copenhagen vender brought to the wedding party by Prince Joachim.
Before the departure the Crown Prince took part in surrounding the bridal couple for the traditional bridal waltz with family and Joachim's best friends. It ended with Prince Joachim getting his socks cut up into peices [a Danish tradition].
Both Fredrik and Mary now look forward to coming events, the marking of his 40th birthday tomorrow, and the subsequent party next Saturday at Fredensborg Palace for the popular Crown Prince and his wife.

Joachim & Marie: still more ...

  • Prince Joachim chose the bouquet for Marie according to old Danish custom, surprising her as the tradition in France is that the father chooses the bouquet.

  • Commentators and journalists were surprised by the emotion of the normally very composed Prince Joachim. His emotion seemed to be also connected to the presence of his sons who of course mean so much to him, even media people also shed some tears!

  • Princess Marie's father Alain Cavallier has, as is tradition, recieved the Grand Cross of the Order of Dannebrog. This is both as a courtesy but also to ensure that although he may be outranked by many in Denmark, he is only outranked by royals and heads of state in regard to orders. The fathers of Henrik, Mary and Alexandra also received the same order.

  • Marie has recieved the Order of the Elephant from Queen Margrethe as she is now royal and also a countess.

  • The tiara which Marie wore today still belongs to Queen Margrethe, according to the official website ('The tiara belongs to Her Majesty The Queen.'). Unlike Alexandra's (Alexandrine tiara) and Crown Princess Mary's wedding tiara (a personal gift from the Queen and Prince Henrik), the tiara is at Marie's disposal as long as she is married to Prince Joachim. The tiara which was presented to Marie by Queen Margrethe, was originally a gift from her father Frederik IX. The tiara originally belonged to Princess Dagmar, daughter of Frederik VIII and Queen Louisa (many thanks Vibeke!)

  • Marie's make-up was done by the stylist Dennis Knudsen.

  • The wedding dress was designed by David Arasa and Claudio from the French/Spanish fashion house Arasa Morelli

  • The diamond earrings are from Geneva

  • The Danish Boys Choir sang at the wedding, Prince Joachim is the choir's patron

  • Felix and Nikolai rode back to Schackenborg Castle with the Queen and Prince Henrik

  • Princess Alexia (cousin and Isabella's godmother) rode back to Schackenborg Castle from the church with Frederik and Mary

  • Prince Joachim and Marie had attended a wedding rehearsal two days before the wedding

  • The Bugatti which took the newly married couple back to Schackenborg, according to B.T., is a copy of the original model from 1931, Bugatti type 41Royale. The bugatti, named Krone (crown) 41 for the occasion was borrowed from Donington Grand Prix Collection. It was the same collection that lent cars to one of the most successful exhibitions ever in ARoS art museum in Århus. If there was a blemish on the day, it was the exhaust the vehicle gave forth all along the route
