Frederik @ Sport 2007

On Saturday (January 5) Crown Prince Frederik attended the annual Sport Show 2007 organised by Denmark's Sports Association at the Messecenter in Herning. Frederik presented the rowers Mads Reinholdt Rasmussen and Rasmus Quist Hansen with the award of Sports Name(s) of the Year 2007, an award which has been made since 1991. Their specialty in the discipline of rowing is in the men's lightweight double sculls.

Denmark's biggest gold medal hopes for the Summer Olympics, Mads Rasmussen and Rasmus Quist, were honoured on Saturday evening as the year's Danish Sports Name 2007.
The two rowers won the world championship last year as well as the world record at a World Cup event.
And so, it was enough to beat the Danish men's national handball team and the speedway racer Nicki Pedersen in the race for the Sports Name of the Year, which is awarded by Denmark's Sports Association and
Morgenavisen Jyllands-Posten and given for the year's best Danish athletics performance.
Dominating in their class -
The pair who have rowed together since 2001, have been totally dominant in their class in recent seasons, and they have not been defeated in their men's double light sculls class since July 2006, which was a defeat they avenged a couple of months later by winning thier first world championship.
This was a title that Rasmussen and Quist successfully defended in 2007.
Therefore Mads Rasmussen and Rasmus Quist are also big favourites when they start at the Olympic Games in Beijing this year.
As yet neither have managed to hang Olympic medals on the wall, but they spend their time at home working on the plan which will achieve the goal they missed out on when they came a bitter fourth at the 2004 Olympic Games.

  • Jyllands Posten 'Kronprinsen stadig IOC-favorit' - The Crown Prince Still IOC favourite:

06.01.08 The Crown Prince is still the favourite to become the next Danish representative on the International Olympic Committee (IOC). This is according to Danish Sports Association chairman Niels Nygaard. In October next year it is to be decided who will replace Kai Holm as the Danish representative on the IOC. Kai Holm has supported Crown Prince Frederik's [nomination] and he is still the favourite. But there has been extensive criticism. The critics do not like the possibility that the Crown Prince might express political points of view to do the IOC job, and at the same time there is a concern that it may be difficult for the press and the media to have free access to the Danish IOC member if he is also the Crown Prince. But Denmark's Sports Association's chairman Niels Nygaard isn't in any doubt that the Crown Prince will be elected. "We just have so many clear signals for the Crown Prince to become a member of the IOC. He is a very involved athlete and very engaged with how all the interested parties think," Niels Nygaard said to B.T. Ritzau
