Frederik @ 2009 IOC Congress launch

Last week on October 6, Crown Prince Frederik took part in the Danish Sports Federation's launch of the IOC Congress Copenhagen 2009. The launch marks one year to the beginning of the 121st IOC Session and XIII Olympic Congress, to be held in Copenhagen in October 2009. There will be around 2,000-3,000 delegates who will discuss the future of the Olympic Movement at the 13th Olympic Congress with the theme: the Olympic Movement in Society. The launch was held at the Glass House at Tivoli for 700 guests. Denmark will also host a Virtual Olympic Congress to maximise the participation of as many delegates as possible. According to Jacques Rogge, head of the IOC, Denmark is adding an important layer to the Congress by organising the Danish Year of Sport. “All the events organised in the framework of that project are the best illustration for the place of the Olympic movement in society,” said President Rogge. The logo for the meetings in Denmark next year was also launched (below).

Launch Event in Tivoli | Monday 6 October 2008
Chers M. le Président, Excellences, Distingués invitées et invités, Mesdames et Messieurs,
It is a great pleasure for me to take part in this event today, being able to witness how the organizing parties have joined forces in doing their utmost to make next year’s IOC Session and Olympic Congress a memorable event. I am sure you will succeed.
And what a wonderful sight it is to watch all you young people here in front of me - you will be one of the focal points of next year’s Olympic Congress and I hope that by bringing the congress to Copenhagen, the Danish youth will be inspired to venture into the world of sports.
Because no matter what age you are, sport can make a difference. I began sailing only a decade ago and today I treasure it highly and find it challenging both physically and mentally. But not only sports, also music and arts play an important role in my life.
Therefore I can wholeheartedly say that I am proud to hereby open the organizing committee’s music competition, where all students of the Danish conservatoires are invited to create an Overture for the Copenhagen Olympic Congress.
The Overture is to be performed by young musicians at the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Congress next year and the composer or composers of the winning score will be invited on a musical study trip to a foreign country.
I am sure, that the motto of the Olympic Congress, ”Taking the Pulse”, can serve as inspiration – not only to the young composers, but also to all of us across the world, who care about sport and the Olympic Movement. Thank you.
