Frederik & Mary in Romania

Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary are making an official visit to Romania for two days. Today they met with the President of Romania, Traian Basescu and his wife Maria in Bucharest. After they arrived in the Honor Hallway in the Cotroceni Palace in Bucharest, talks were conducted between the official delegations of Denmark and Romania. Afterwards Frederik and Mary visited the Art Collections Museum. Today will be spent in Bucharest and then tomorrow Frederik and Mary will be in Transylvania to mark the European Cultural Capital 2007, which this year celebrates Sibiu. They will also go to the ancient Transylvanian medieval town of Sighişoara, the oldest fortress town still occupied.

The official visit is at the invitation of the President Traian Basescu. Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik made a state visit to Romania in 2000 and in 2004 the then Romanian president, Ion Iliescu, visited Denmark.

The visit partly observes the EU celebration of the European Capitals of Culture, which was an intitiative of Melina Mercouri and the Council of Ministers in 1985 to increase intercultural dialogue, cultural awareness and contact between the peoples of member states. This year the Transylvanian town of Sibiu is a designated cultural site.

I can't say why, but though Mary's outfit is lovely, she still just seems like someone dressing up as a princess, rather than a real princess, even after all this time.
